Back in the 1970s, a low-budget thriller loosely based on a real killing spree was released. The Town That Dreaded Sundown is now considered a micro classic of sorts, and one that inspired a loose remake/sequel. How does this new version rate, especially considering I've not seen the original? Stick with me!
Sixty five years after a masked serial killer terrorized the small town of Texarkana, the so-called Moonlight Murders begin again. Is it a copycat or something even more sinister?
First off, this is more sequel than remake, and one with a meta spin along the lines of the Scream films and other 1990s slasher flicks. But it's heart is worn on a sleeve cut from 80s horror movies, with loads of nudity of graphic violence.
I dug this movie a lot!
OK, the final act suffers from a weak reveal and a few dumb moves on the part of the protagonist, who is well played by the beautiful Addison Timlin. But the trip getting there is well worth it, with brutal slayings, boobies and a decent cast doing some decent work. Yes, even Anthony Anderson.
Uber kudos to director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, who cut his teeth on American Horror Story. He's created a beautiful horror flick that embodies a dreamlike, almost nightmarish quality. This is close to an art film, but a lean and mean one.
I wanna check me out the original Town That Dreaded Sundown. As for this trip, it's one worth taking, even if the final 20 minutes let me down. And I'll be watching it again one day, which means it's a Good.
