Oculus is a movie Shawn and I had a lot of anticipation for. We dug director Mike Flanagan's previous flick, Absentia, which is one of the best low-budget indie horrors in recent memory. To top things off we landed an exclusive interview with Oculus composers The Newton Brothers prior to release. Of course, we never got to catch the thing in theatres.
I finally sat down with Oculus the other night and got to answer the age-old question -- was it worth the wait? Was it? Stick with me!
A woman tries to exonerate her brother, who was committed of murder, by proving the crime was executed by a supernatural force.
The short answer is yes and no. More yes than no, but Oculus isn't quite as awesome as I'd hoped. It's still better, and smarter, than 95 per cent of mainstream horror movies, but the flick just isn't as shorts shitting as Absentia. And that's a shame.
Everything else about the movie owned. Well made, great score, good acting, a few solid scares and an original idea. Plus there's not a frame of CGI in the thing, near as I could tell. That's pretty boss when you stop to think about it. But I wasn't freaked out as much as I'd expected.
Oculus proves Flanagan is a smart genre filmmaker, and a talent to watch. I look forward to Somnia, which should be out later this year. And yeah, I'm curious to see what he does with I Know What You Did Last Summer. I just hope he cranks up the fear factor with his future endeavours.
A Good.

I watched this show with big anticipation as well. I picked a night, got some treats from 7-11, and sat back with the wife and paid 6 bucks on optic to watch it in HD.
ReplyDeleteIt was ok here and there, not scaring me at all, but sort of had a good story? However, the ending royally sucked. I haven't had that feeling I wanted to throw something since I was a kid and died playing Jumpman Junior on my Colecovision. Where did the mirror come from? Why did it do what it did? It kept flipping back and forth and never explained why it was evil. I was hoping for more and was disappointed in the end. Lesson - you will never be normal once you leave the looney bin. Sorry.
