Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and writer/director Edgar Wright hit comedy gold with Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Do the comedic trio score a hat trick with their latest effort? Stick with me!
Five friends who reunite in an attempt to top their epic pub crawl from 20 years earlier unwittingly become humankind's only hope for survival.
First off no, this isn't as funny as Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz. Which isn't to say that it isn't hilarious or equally as entertaining. But The World's End isn't a laugh riot, although it is pretty damn funny. Reading my email?
The World's End is more reflective; it's a study of one hitting middle age with a career, wife and kids -- or, as is the case with Pegg's character, hitting middle age with none of the above -- and looking back on your youth and dreams for the future and how it all sorted out.
It's also a movie about aliens taking over the world. For the record.
Suffice to say, The World's End is a ride. It's funny, touching, exciting and full of humanity. And there's fighting, lots of drinking, and more than a few reflections on life, the universe and everything. If any of this makes any sense drop me a line at basementreviews@gmail.com. I've had a few myself.
Bottom line, I enjoyed the hell out of The World's End. I found all the characters relatable -- even the alien Network -- and had a hoot during the entire running time. Wright, Pegg and Frost are a tough act to beat, so I say join 'em! A Good for me. Fans won't be disappointed.
