The latest in my seemingly never-ending quest to revisit the movies of my youth. Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone was part of the 3D craze of the early 80s, and fit right in with wannabe epics like Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn, Jaws 3 and other garbage. And by garbage, I mean awesome . . . back in the day.
Does this Peter Strauss, Molly Ringwald and Ernie Hudson vehicle still rate? Stick with me!
Three hot chicks make an emergency landing on a planet plagued with a fatal disease, but are captured by dictator Overdog. Adventurer Wolff goes there to rescue them and meets Niki, the only Earthling left from a medical expedition. Combining their talents, they try to rescue the women.
Spacehunter is preoccupied with hot chicks, which is fine by me. But, looking back, this is a pretty sexist flick. Why are the three hot chicks so important? How did a band of amazonian hot chicks end up on the planet? How come Molly Ringwald is hotter than I remember her being? These are the questions Spacehunter left me with.
As for the movie itself, this is still an entertaining yarn so long as you don't think about it too much. There's no real plot, character development, or logic. But it is mindless fun, full of witty enough one liners and good banter between Strauss, Ringwalk and future Ghostbuster/Basement guest Ernie Hudson.
I paid $12.99 to buy Spacehunter. I dug the revisit enough to watch it again. When it first came out, it was awesome. Today, it falls into the so-bad-it's-good category. Which makes it a Good.
