Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and
review at least one horror movie a day for
the month of
October . . . because he's awesome that way! Tonight, Bellamy asks "What's your favourite scary movie" for a fourth time.
Sure is good to see horror mastermind Wes Craven bounce back after the abysmal 'My Soul To Take', I guess it took going back to the well of one of his more popular series to make it happen! The 'Scream' movies haven't all been consistently great, in fact I feel like each installment got progressively worse, culminating in 'Scream 3' which was way too up its own ass and forgot to be entertaining let alone scary. Good news, everyone! 'Scream 4' is the best one since the original! Watching this was like stepping back into a time machine to the 90's, back when the first became such a huge hit and an honest cultural phenomenon, and seeing all the old gang once again fleeing in terror from Ghostface brought a smile to my face. Ah slasher flicks, my favourite sub-genre of horror, they always manage to do it for me, even when they're terrible I can still find joy in seeing some nut job hunt down good looking people and viciously murder them! That's a normal feeling, right?
Obviously lots has changed in horror since the last 'Scream' movie and it's all, or mostly, incorporated here. Torture porn, voyeurism, found-footage, and no, the virgin is no longer safe. Serves those high and mighty virgins right. It's great to see Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courtney Cox back in this universe and my favourite new addition to the cast, Rory Culkin, as the new Matthew Lillard, all too aware of what the current horror "rules" are. If you've watched the original 'Scream' recently then you may have forgotten just how violent and brutal it is at times and I'm very pleased to say that not only does 'Scream 4' meet it at that level but then gives it a fist bump and goes even further! We may have been de-sesnitized by the blood and gore of the 'Saw' movies but they were always so over the top, it's refreshing to see someone just simply and brutally stabbed to death, screaming and crying out in pain until their final breath leaves their body. Again, I swear this is normal! I'm not crazy! OK, a little crazy...
If you loved the first two 'Scream' movies, or could even tolerate the third, then this is required horror viewing!
