Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and
review at least one horror movie a day for
the month of
October . . . because he's awesome that way! Tonight . . . Bellamy catches a movie we haven't seen yet. How about that!?!
Apologies in advance, I've had a bit to drink tonight so hopefully that won't influence this review too much although with this particular flick I think that tying a few on is a total benefit! Remember 'Creepshow'? Yes? No? That was a horror anthology and basically what that means, if you're un-familair, is that it's a bunch of horrific short stories that make up a whole, usually with some kind of bookend that is incorporated--that is what VHS is. Now, I'll admit, I was not a big fan of the first one because I found it to be way too amateurish in areas and only a couple of the stories were worthwhile but this one, the sequel... man, what an improvement! It's like the makers of the original listened to everyone's complaints and did their darndest to fix whatever problems there were before and just amp things up in every possible area; this is badass!
I'll say right off the bat, the best segment belongs to Gareth Evans, the guy responsible for the ass-kickery that was 'The Raid', and his short story revolves around a cult and... what can go wrong. I seriously do not want to say any more because when you watch what he has masterminded here you will be in shock at what occurs, it's insane! Some other notable directors who contributed include Adam Wingard (You're Next) and Jason Eisner (The Crazies) and both manage to inject some much needed life, which was missing from the original, into their proceedings. We've got a zombie story unlike anything you've ever seen before, a kid's sleepover party that goes completely off the rails and the horrible results of a man whose eye is also a camera, recording some truly ridiculous things.
This is a horror movie for people who love horror and can find the inherent fun in the genre, who can not take anything too seriously but instead just sit back, crack open a beer and try to laugh as much as you cringe. We need more horror movies like this, they're a terrible amount of fun!
