A period drama might not sound like our pint of ale here in The Basement, but a desire to see good movies get made is. Which is why we want to let you know about a new movie that's putting together funding for what sounds like an elaborate production, especially for an independent film.
Moonglow promises to take audiences through post WWI America, the glamour of Old Hollywood, the market crash of 1929 and the Great Depression, paralleling the ups and downs of the economy with the ups and downs of a young couple's relationship.
According to Anna Peterek, one of the producers, the filmmakers want Moonglow to stand apart from the primary genres of Houston films -- horror and raunchy comedy -- by creating "something new, something made of beauty and depth.
"Yes, taking on a period piece is difficult, especially for an indie film, but for the writers and producers of Moonglow, the end result will be well-worth the challenges ahead," she said.
Rather than starting with popular crowd-funding sites like Indiegogo or Kickstarter, Moonglow's two main characters use an online wedding registry to raise funds. Instead of registering at Bed Bath and Beyond or Tiffany’s, Moonglow’s registry includes hard drives and Best Buy gift cards as well as cash gifts. Sounds pretty meta to me. I dig!
Their first fundraiser in October was a “Bachelorette Party” for the main female character. The second fundraiser takes place on Dec. 1 at Celtic Gardens in Houston, in partnership with the Leukemia/Lymphoma society, and is a silent bachelor/bachelorette auction from 6:00 – 9:00 P.M. For more information check out the film's Facebook page. One can also explore the online registry.

Moonglow is directed by Renee Edd and produced by Judy Garlow, Anna Peterek, and Renee Edd, with Michelle Mower as consulting producer. Sharad Patel, director of the feature film Christian Roane, is director of photography. Kevin Cahoon, star of the recent Disney feature film Mars Needs Moms and the original Broadway cast of The Lion King and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, will assistant direct.
I admire the way the production team is going about getting this movie made. We'll keep you posted on Moonglow's march to the big screen.
Sounds awesome!
