Slime City Massacre goes digital

UPDATE! We just received word today (Oct 28) that Slime City Massacre's limited theatrical run starts in select cities today! The same day we get to chat with Brooke in The Basement for our Halloween Spooktacular 2! Check local listings to see if it's showing in a theatre near you!!

The biggest benefit of being in The Basement is meeting all kinds of cool people, and few have been cooler than Brooke Lewis!

I spent the morning interviewing Brooke, who won The Golden Cob Award for Best Scream Queen for her performance in the 2010 sci-fi/horror film Slime City Massacre, for our upcoming Halloween special on Oct. 28. We had a blast. She's funny, sexy, talented and pulls no punches . . . everything a Scream Queen needs to be. Fans are going to have a great time this Halloween.

Slime City Massacre hit DVD in May courtesy of Shriek Now. However, IndieFilmNet's new Cinema Meets Horror midnight movie-flavored series is about to release it in as many as 60 digital theaters in North America. Based in Montreal, IFN offers programming to a network of 50 digital cinemas in the US, 10 in Canada, and additional theaters around the world.  Although IFN specializes in art house fare such as documentaries, operas, and repertory classics, the company has already programmed such grindhouse fare as Hobo With A Shotgun and El Monstro Del Mar! with success.

"The media landscape has changed so drastically that the release pattern for independent films is changing as well," says Gregory Lamberson, who wrote and directed Slime City Massacre and the original Slime City back in 1988.

The original Slime City developed its reputation as a midnight movie back in 1988, but it only played at one theater in New York City for five weekends.  IFN will offer SCM to theaters, which can screen it whenever they want, says Lambertson.  Because the theater owners have the unique flexibility to customize the release to their need, the filmmakers don't have to worry about a make or break opening weekend.

"It's the digital age equivalent of a drive-in run," he said.

Slime City Massacre stars Debbie Rochon (Best Actress, the Eerie Horror Film Festival), Brooke Lewis (Best Scream Queen, the B Movie Celebration), and author Kealan Patrick Burke (Best Actor, the PollyGrind Film Festival), with appearances by Roy Frumkes and Lloyd Kaufman.  The film had its world premiere at the Beloit International Film Festival, and won the Biggest Baddest Mother of the PollyGrind and the Polished Apple Award for Best Sequel.

  Summer approaches, inspiring thoughts of sunshine, backyard parties, and having a tip and sip with friends.  With that in mind, I bring you this week sunny beverage. To make a slushtail, mix a can of frozen orange juice, a can of frozen lemonade (or limeade), a can of pineapple juice, a couple cups of black tea (or English Breakfast), and two cups of bourbon- such as Southern Comfort, in a pitcher.  When it's all nicely mixed, put it in the freezer until it's a nice slushy consistency. Unlock your fate with The Puzzle

When my dad wasn't working, building stuff or being my dad, he was making puzzles. It was a guaranteed way for him to unwind. So it was with great interest that I sat down to watch Italian filmmaker Davide Melini's award-winning short The Puzzle. You see, the mother in the five-minute film likes to relax with puzzles just like my dad. Unfortunately, her good-for-nothing son keeps harassing her for money. Losing herself in her favourite passtime, the mother soon discovers that completing this puzzle might unlock a nightmare. The Puzzle has been an official selection at more European film festivals than you can shake a stick at, and was voted Third Best Italian Film at the Rome International Film Festival in 2008. Having watched it, I'm not surprised. It's a tight little film that hits you hard in the final few seconds. The Animated Addict: "The Adventures of Tintin" (2011)

If you're a 40 + white dude, like myself, you may remember a comic series called " The Adventures of Tintin ".  I know I remember them.  This series, dating back to 1929, got turned into a animated feature film by Steven Spielberg in 2011. After buying a model of ship called The Unicorn, teenaged journalist Tintin finds himself on adventure that will take him from the high seas, to the low deserts, and from the distant past to the present.  With his trusty dog, Snowy, by his side, Tintin uncovers a story connecting two men across the centuries.. . The story is really quite good.  It's well crafted, and high paced- with just enough slow moments to build and develop the world and the characters.  This is the sort of adventure story you'd find in the old serials of the 1930's and '40's.  In fact, it felt like it was the sort of tale that you'd find Indiana Jones undertaking.  I found myself swept up, and swept along as our hero swung from one e
